Digital Future Aotearoa Children's Program
Code Club Aotearoa is delighted to host five days of hands-on workshops for the children of attendees at the 2019 Linux Conf Au. The program is open to the children of attendees aged 6+. Monday and Tuesday are being run as stand alone days, whereas Wednesday to Friday is a 3 day workshop where students are expected to attend all three days. To register your child, head to 
The children's program is based in Rehua 005. Parents are expected to come in to the building each morning to sign their child in. Morning and afternoon tea, and lunch time will be run concurrently with the conference program, please collect your child at each break. The program will run from 8:30 till 17:00 each day.
Stand Alone Days
Monday 21st January
The first day of the children's program will start with games and getting to know each other before exploring using software on a global scale. The students will be able to work through Code Club projects exploring space, and NASA's open API with help from Code Club volunteers. The afternoon will be spent completing creative coding projects and creating our own paper rockets, finishing off with a movie to relax and enjoy.
Tuesday 22nd January
For the second day of the children's program, we will team up with local structural engineers and Quakecraft to look at hardware and engineering in a local earthquake prone context. In the afternoon, we will catch the bus to Quake City, an exhibition charting the aftermath of the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury Earthquakes. Students attending on Tuesday will need to wear comfortable shoes and bring a sunhat.
Three Day Mash-Up Event
Wednesday 23rd January
After welcome games and an introduction to the design process, students will be split into the teams in which they will work for the next 3 days. In their teams, students will create a prototype of an IoT device with an environmental focus. After attending a conference talk and a Q&A with the speakers, the groups will brainstorm and design a product, with help from Code Club volunteers and FabLab Christchurch.
Thursday 24th January
Thursday will start with a discussion around ethics, data, and digital design, followed by physical making activities with FabLab. In the afternoon, students and volunteers will complete a Canterbury bush walk (weather permitting). Students attending on Thursday will need to wear comfortable shoes and bring a jacket and sunhat.
Friday 25th January
Friday morning will be spent finishing the prototypes with FabLab. The group will then present their products to the attendees at the conference close.
